Environmental Assessment (EA)

According to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations, an EA is a concise public document prepared by a federal agency when a proposed action is not covered by a categorical exclusion or otherwise exempt from NEPA. Federal Agencies use the EA to determine whether the proposed action has the potential to cause significant environmental effects.

The purpose of an EA is to:

  • Provide evidence and analysis sufficient to determine whether an EIS is required.
  • Aid a federal agency's compliance with NEPA when no EIS is necessary.
  • Facilitate preparation of an EIS when one is necessary.
  •

If no significant environmental impacts are encountered, the Federal Government issues a "Finding of No Significant Impact" (FONSI).

Most Bolton & Menk, Inc. EA projects are completed for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The average time to complete an EA is 6-10 months.
