Pedestrian and ADA Compliance GPS Data
Collection Services, Mn/DOT District 7
Mn/DOT District 7 (Mankato) has contracted with Bolton & Menk, Inc. to collect the locations and conditions of all the pedestrian ramps and associated features along the state roadways in District 7 using GPS. This information is being collected for approximately 1,450 pedestrian ramps. The collected data will be used with Mn/DOT’s GIS system for analysis.
The features being located include pedestrian ramps, pedestrian landings, curb & gutter, crosswalks, Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) pushbuttons, crosswalk signs, sidewalks and transit stops. Feature data and condition attributes used for the collection were defined by Mn/DOT. A few examples of the data and condition attributes associated with each location include ramp type, landing size, the presence of truncated domes, ramp slope, gutter slopes, crosswalk marking type, and APS button height.
Trimble GeoXH 2008 GPS Data Collectors with a Trimble Tornado antenna is used for the collection. A digital camera with a Bluetooth connection to the Data Collector is also used for linking a photo of the feature to the GPS location.
The information collected will be used by Mn/DOT staff to map the locations of pedestrian data and assess the conditions and compliance of the pedestrian ramps. The data collected will then be used to plan replacement and rehabilitation of the pedestrian ramps and associated pedestrian features to meet ADA compliance.
