What can I do to prepare for this career?
In High School:
- Take science, math, and computer courses
- Work on your communication, presentation and public speaking skills
- Maintain a "B" average or better
- Speak to your guidance or career counselor for more information
- Seek out a job shadow opportunity
- Attend available career fairs and career exploration days
In College:
- Gain experience through internships or summer jobs
- Be active in student engineering associations
- Talk to other civil engineers or land surveyors about the profession
- Attend available career fairs
- Maintain a strong GPA
By performing a job shadow you get the chance to see what a “day on the job” is like or see how particular concepts are applied to tasks in “real world” activities.
Most of our students will either:
- Spend a few hours to a half a day with an Engineer following them through their regular activities, or
- Be provided a rotating schedule that allows them to visit with several different professionals in different careers such as Municipal
- Engineer, Design Technician, Transportation Engineer, GIS Technician, Survey Drafter, etc.
Most job shadow reqeusts are tailored toward the student’s interest.
