What can I do to prepare for this career?

In High School:

  • Take science, math, and computer courses
  • Work on your communication, presentation and public speaking skills
  • Maintain a "B" average or better
  • Speak to your guidance or career counselor for more information
  • Seek out a job shadow opportunity
  • Attend available career fairs and career exploration days

In College:

  • Gain experience through internships or summer jobs
  • Be active in student engineering associations
  • Talk to other civil engineers or land surveyors about the profession
  • Attend available career fairs
  • Maintain a strong GPA

By performing a job shadow you get the chance to see what a “day on the job” is like or see how particular concepts are applied to tasks in “real world” activities.

Most of our students will either:

  • Spend a few hours to a half a day with an Engineer following them through their regular activities, or
  • Be provided a rotating schedule that allows them to visit with several different professionals in different careers such as Municipal
  • Engineer, Design Technician, Transportation Engineer, GIS Technician, Survey Drafter, etc.

Most job shadow reqeusts are tailored toward the student’s interest.
