City of Waconia - TH 284/TH 5 Improvements

Project Summary

The City of Waconia in cooperation with Carver County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation are completing a project that will replace the signal at the TH 284 and TH 5 intersection and will reconstruct the intersection with additional turn lanes and medians. The work is expected to occur late in the summer of 2012. The project will be staged to minimize the amount of impact to the traveling public and nearby businesses.

Staging Summary
The project will require closure of TH 284 south of TH 5 to thru traffic. Business access will be maintained throughout construction. TH 5 will remain open during construction with work directly on TH 5 occurring over a period of about 1-2 weeks. Olive Street will be closed for approximately 2 weeks during construction but will remain open during the remainder of the work. The signal at the intersection will be removed and TH 5 will not stop at the intersection during the construction project. TH 284 and Olive Street will be controlled by Stop Signs until the new signal is constructed and the new intersection is open. The project is expected to occur over approximately 8-10 weeks in the Summer of 2012.

New Signal Design Information “Flashing Yellow Arrow Design”
A relatively new signal will be installed at this location that will become more and more common across the State and Country as it has become a new standard. The signal provide more flexibility to control the intersection during heavy traffic conditions while reducing needless wait time for drivers during low traffic periods.  More information can be found at: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/trafficeng/signals/flashingyellowarrow.html
