LAND SURVEYING

Since 1949, Bolton & Menk, Inc. has provided comprehensive surveying services to a wide range of clientele. Today we employ professional and technical staff to support more than 30 survey crews throughout Minnesota.

Our surveying services range from boundary surveys and detailed ALTA/ACSM Land Title Surveys to complex construction site staking and comprehensive design, topographic and control surveys for large and unique projects. Our professional and technical staff will work closely with you to plan and perform each survey assignment in a manner consistent with your technical requirements, schedules and budget.

Over the years, Bolton & Menk has been at the forefront of new survey technologies. Through experienced use of both proven and cutting-edge measurement and mapping systems, we remain committed to efficiently providing professionally competent and reliable surveying services.

Field surveys are typically completed using a combination of automated data collection methods and traditional methods that are planned to best address your project needs. When appropriate, we use GPS (Global Positioning System) techniques for more extensive projects and specialized control surveys. Project maps and survey drawings are prepared using design and survey CAD (computer aided drafting), often in accordance with your project's special technical and software requirements and formats.

Our many repeat clients regularly rely upon our commitment to quality surveying and dependable performance. These clients include attorneys, contractors, developers, engineers, architects, realtors, and commercial and industrial business planners, plus various government agencies such as municipalities, counties and the State of Minnesota.

Bolton & Menk, Inc has company wide implemented the NSPS Certified Survey Technician Program. Each of our offices is qualified to participate in Contractor Staking projects for the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) sponsors a comprehensive national certification program for survey technicians. The program is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor as part of the National Apprenticeship Program. The Survey Technician Certification Board (STCB), which administers this program, recognizes the importance of technicians to the surveying and mapping profession.

This four-level certification program for surveying technicians throughout the United States indicates official recognition by NSPS-ACSM that a person has demonstrated that he or she is minimally competent to perform surveying tasks at a specified technical level. Certification provides the individual with a sense of achievement, since it reflects advancement in the field of surveying.

METHODS

In addition to traditional survey methods, we actively rely on a broad spectrum of cutting-edge surveying technology. Survey projects can be completed using a combination of techniques to most efficiently and accurately meet your project goals.

Robotic Survey System: A robotic station can take survey measurements without direct operator handling through the use of a remote-controlled “tracking system” technique. The highly accurate robot can be operated remotely at the point of measurement or staking, thus eliminating the need for a technician at the base instrument. This system often makes it possible for one surveyor to do the work that formerly required two technicians to complete.

GPS (Global Positioning System): We use advanced GPS techniques as required for specialized or larger scale control surveys. GPS is commonly used in control work, but may also be used in other survey areas, such as section surveys and highway surveys as needed.

Optical Surveying Equipment: Included in our equipment are traditional electronic total stations with data collectors and traditional optical levels.

In addition to surveying and construction staking, we also use drafting and design software running on multiple platforms, such as AutoCAD and Micro Station, to transfer and translate collected survey data into project-specific drawings, such as certificates of surveys, plats, design surveys and maps. Adherence to company-wide drafting standards ensures you receive consistent and quality information from every office.

Bolton & Menk also provides:

  • FEMA elevated certificates
  • Accident plats and large format court room displays
  • Three-dimensional terrain modeling

Project Photo
Mike Smith, an employee of Bolton & Menk, Inc. since 1992, is shown here working at the Pigs Eye Wastewater Treatment Plant in St. Paul. We were hired by the contractor to provide the survey control for construction staking. This particular project was made more difficult by the fact that the first company hired for this service was terminated and we had to make the control fit the existing structure and the structural steel that was not yet installed.

Mike is shown using a "peanut prism" to make distance measurements along a baseline. Two baselines were established perpendicular to each other to allow for convenient staking of a grid.
