APWA Iowa Chapter Recognizes Best Projects

The American Public Works Association (APWA) – Iowa Chapter recognized the Cities of Ames and Cedar Rapids with 2018 Project of the Year awards. Both projects were nominated by project engineer, Bolton & Menk.

The City of Ames South Skunk River Watershed Improvements (City Hall Parking Lot) project received Iowa Chapter Project of the Year in the Environment Category. This construction project provided the city with an opportunity to explore different stormwater water quality practices, their associated costs, and ongoing maintenance requirements. Through this exploration, staff were able to get a better understanding of stormwater runoff carried through the City Hall site by existing storm sewer systems; and ultimately how changes to the west parking lot can reduce the overall runoff passed downstream to the South Skunk River Watershed Basin.

The City of Cedar Rapids Kirkwood Boulevard Roundabout/Hoosier Creek Culvert Replacement project received Iowa Chapter Project of the Year in the Transportation Category. This was a “project of firsts” for the City of Cedar Rapids, it is the city’s first roundabout and first integral foundation arch culvert. The roundabout has improved safety and traffic efficiency at the College Community School and more roundabouts have been constructed. The Hoosier Creek culvert replacement has eliminated roadway flooding in that area.

Congratulations!
