SMSC Cultural Center Awarded Top Project

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Cultural Center was named a 2019 Top Project by Finance & Commerce. This award recognizes projects from all over Minnesota built in 2019 that showcasea degree of difficulty, creativity in design, innovative construction techniques, cooperation among contractors and management, and sustainability efforts. The people and companies behind the projects also will be honored at a July 23 event (with an Oct. 15 alternate date) at the Nicollet Island Pavilion.

In response to member growth within the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, a larger facility was needed for community members during council meetings and events when all members are present. The community also has an extensive inventory of cultural artifacts with no space to display and tell the story of their history and culture.

Bolton & Menk worked with community members to develop a site plan for a Cultural Center building and plans to accommodate future buildings within a larger campus capable of housing anticipated future growth. These efforts included coordination with community members and the SMSC Business Council to establish a budget and tailor phased construction of site elements within both the budget and anticipated growth.

Bolton & Menk developed concepts and construction documents integrating a Cultural Center building into a larger campus site containing water features, restored prairie areas, and gathering spaces for educational, recreational, and interpretive opportunities. The Cultural Center building was completed in July 2019, with site improvements to be phased as restored prairie areas become established.
