A high traffic roadway connects residential areas to Iowa State University. Traffic demands on these connecting routes has increased significantly as the community grows. The pavement on Bloomington Road experienced accelerated deterioration because of new developments in north Ames. The road received several asphalt overlays with multiple patches in recent years, resulting in a rough surface and poor quality, along with pedestrian ramps that did not meet ADA requirements.
Bolton & Menk coordinated design between Bloomington Road and 24th Street, including a combination of asphalt overlay and full depth reconstruction. The road is a major connection to north residential neighborhoods and Iowa State University. The project was funded by the Iowa Department of Transportation STP. To stay on a critical schedule, the project team coordinated all reviews and Iowa DOT involvement. The project was completed in the summer months and opened to traffic before college students returned to school.
