A missing trail connection between Anoka’s Mississippi River Community Park and the Mississippi West Regional Park in Ramsey was evident. Bolton & Menk helped guide the design process and manage federal aid requirements for the Mississippi River Trail. Through a thoughtful public engagement process and creative design expressed through visual renderings, public acceptance was obtained.
Project elements included adjusting the trail alignment to avoid significant trees and wetland areas to the extent practical. The result was a savings of over 100 trees and a reduction of over a half acre of wetland impacts. In addition, concrete slab bridges were required due to flooding concerns. Structural experts developed a low-profile bridge with painted riverstone form-liners to blend with the environment. The outcome was a federally approved plan that incorporated the visions of both cities.
