Safe Routes to School Infrastructure

The United South Central School District in Wells was underway with plans to construct a new K-12 school on the south side of town. Through previous SHIP grants, the city collected data to understand existing travel patterns and SRTS issues. With construction of the new school taking shape, Bolton & Menk developed a project for a SRTS infrastructure application. We led a public involvement process that helped the community, school district, and its partners understand the issues and needs for SRTS at the new school site.

Services to initiate the project included developing a plan for data collection, clearly identifying the need for infrastructure improvements, coordinating public involvement activities, and using the input to generate a complete infrastructure project.

The project was selected by MnDOT for funding as part of their 2014 solicitation. Preliminary and construction engineering services were provided and a grant was used toward 80 percent of the overall construction and engineering costs. The project improved and created 25,000 square feet of sidewalk with ADA-compliant enhancements and upgraded a pedestrian crossing at TH 22 with a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon.
