City of Belmond, Iowa
The City of Belmond had an aging lime softening facility built in 1969 and wanted to evaluate their water supply needs, including treatment, storage, and distribution, for the next 20 years.
Bolton & Menk prepared a feasibility plan and evaluated water supply needs. Based on the report recommendation, a 2 MGD lime softening facility, well field, and distribution mains were designed. Two 700-foot-deep wells with 12-inch steel casings were constructed. Each well and pump has a 600 gpm capacity with a third well site prepared for future use. The distribution main construction consisted of two separate lines; one connecting to an existing tower and the other to an existing distribution main. The second main included directional drilling of the main and casing pipe under a Union Pacific Railroad spur line and state highway. The permitting process was facilitated for both the railroad and highway.
Start-up assistance and training was provided for the first year. This facility provides treated water to residents of Belmond and will for the foreseeable future.
