To reduce congestion on CSAH 42, the eastbound turn lane was extended, a new signal constructed, and the bridge was repaired.

CSAH 42 at the I-35W interchange carries more than 50,000 vehicles per day and is near a regional shopping center. To reduce congestion in this busy area, the eastbound turn lane was extended, a new signal was constructed, and the bridge was repaired.

A major consideration was construction staging and traffic control. The bridge required extensive work that would either reduce traffic to one lane in each direction, close the roadway to both directions at the same time, or have directional closures. A traffic analysis, traffic management plan, and schedule was completed to understand traffic impacts.

A directional closure was chosen as the most acceptable option. Detour signing was extensive using multiple roadways for detours to spread traffic in the region. Multiple traffic signal designs were completed at the intersection to find the most acceptable option in the wide roadway environment. The signal design chosen provides for more flexible operations to better meet driver expectations, including more appropriately placed signal heads and the introduction of flashing yellow arrows.
