MnDOT District 4
Safety was a significant concern along the TH 78 corridor. Bolton & Menk worked with MnDOT to identify, develop, and implement low-cost/high-benefit spot safety improvements along this corridor as well as in the City of Battle Lake. The urban reconstruction included reducing the roadway from four lanes to three lanes, constructing bump-outs at crosswalk locations, and enhancing the sidewalks.
A primary challenge was implementing PROWAG guidelines in an urban setting with substantial grade differentials. A sustainable solution was developed with multiple stakeholders by organizing the sidewalk space to include an ADA accessible pedestrian access route and an amenity zone for bike racks, trees, street lighting, trash receptacles, and public art. Our services also included preparation of a MnDOT Staff Approved Level 2 Geometric Layout and construction documents. This project enhanced the downtown area for all modes of transportation.
