Home / WWII Memorial at Warbird Park, City of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
The WWII Veterans Memorial in Warbird Park honors veterans and Myrtle Beach’s role in WWII with symbolic design elements like etched granite and illuminated columns.
The City of Myrtle Beach wanted to develop a new WWII Veterans Memorial to be placed in Warbird Park, creating a memorial that fits the heroism of the many veterans who served during WWII and paying tribute to the contributions that Myrtle Beach provided for the war effort. Bolton & Menk partnered with the City of Myrtle Beach to design a memorial that offers opportunities for interpretation of how Myrtle Beach and the region contributed to training for missions during WWII.
The granite backdrop wall and overall plaza consist of black granite with etched images of the Myrtle Beach Army Airfield with an inspirational quote in the center panel. There are six flags and six Kershaw granite benches representing the six military branches active during WWII, and six decorative light columns illuminating the military branch colors at night. The plaza features a world map sandblasted into the concrete surface, with bronze medallions indicating the locations of major conflicts from the ware. Additionally, a pergola designed to reflect the Army Air Base guard house is located at the entrance to the memorial plaza. The design of this memorial was shaped through meetings with various stakeholders and WWII Veterans, reflecting Myrtle Beach’s role in training operations during WWII and honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
