The City of Stillwater water department recognized GIS could be vital to their daily operations. While the water department had a large collection of maps and operations related data, much of it was disconnected and managed by different departments. The water department wanted all of this information in the most accurate fashion possible. Bolton & Menk worked with water department staff to develop a scope that included GPS data collection and completely remapping the water distribution system. Our GIS staff coordinated a City-wide GPS collection which gathered information for all water distribution infrastructure, including over 2,000 separate locations. This collection led to the creation of spatially accurate (sub-foot) GIS data and locations which were field verified. We also created several data sets from historical information while standardizing the information into a functional data model. The project created an accurate GIS data set for the Stillwater water department to reference for years to come. This information was created in an industry standard ESRI format and will provide the water department flexibility as they continue to build their system.
