Corridor planning and design of three miles of roadway along TH 284 was completed through public involvement and consensus building.
TH 5 at TH 284
City of Waconia, Minnesota
The City of Waconia was experiencing expansion. The expansion required improvements at four primary intersections along TH 284, including one at TH 5.
Through public involvement and consensus building, Bolton & Menk led the corridor planning and design of three miles of roadway along TH 284. A multi-lane roundabout design for 20-year traffic projections (single lane convertible to a double-lane) was selected at three intersections. The design was one of the first roundabouts on a MnDOT trunk highway, the first roundabout proposal in the MnDOT Level 1 Layout Approval Process, and the first Intersection Control Evaluation for a roundabout. A signalized intersection design meeting ADA requirements and inefficient split phasing was selected for the fourth intersection, which was skewed with difficult grades.
Ultimately, Bolton & Menk led the design process that helped establish standards used by MnDOT for roundabout reviews.
