Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have seen a dramatic increase in popularity in recent years. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), reports of pilot interactions with UAS has increased from 238 total sightings in 2014 to 780 sightings through August of 2015. With the sudden increase in UAS operations, the safety of aircraft operators for both manned and unmanned aircraft, as well as the general public, is a primary concern for the FAA. The FAA’s goal is to integrate UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS) safely.
The annual ranking of the Top 500 Engineering Design Firms was released in the May, 2016 issue of Engineering News-Record. This year Bolton & Menk, Inc. broke into the top 200 firms in the country, jumping 24 spots to #179. Bolton & Menk has continued their ascent on the list for the last 20 years, since 1996.
The Hutchinson Municipal Airport – Butler Field Runway 15/33, Taxiway, and Apron Reclamation Project was selected by the Minnesota Council of Airports for the MCOA Project of the Year – Intermediate Airport Award on April 21.

In 1949, John Bolton & Martin Menk, Jr. founded Bolton & Menk as a surveying business in St. Peter, MN, with little more than expertise, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to clients. Housing developments boomed after World War II and the firm was kept busy surveying parcels and planning subdivisions.
The Peter W. Blethen, L.S. Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Peter Blethen. The scholarship is sponsored by the Minnesota Society of Professional Surveyors (MSPS) and funded through the Minnesota Land Surveyors Foundation (MLS).
