Sectors

Bolton & Menk was part of the design team selected to restore historic Pack Square, transforming it into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly public space
rooted in Asheville’s cultural identity. The plan reestablished the historic street grid and introduced a two-block park designed for everyday use and large public gatherings, reflecting the city’s legacy as a festival destination.

The park’s design balances civic heritage with enduring functionality. Durable materials and thoughtful detailing ensure long-term resilience, while features like the amphitheater, great lawn, and central green create a seamless connection between two architecturally significant buildings. A mid-block terrace transitions between the historic square and the green, incorporating a water feature and pavilion that serve both aesthetic and ecological purposes—capturing stormwater for irrigation and anchoring community activity.

Completed in 2007, the project continues to demonstrate how timeless design and strategic material choices can preserve character, support evolving uses, and sustain public spaces for generations.
