ACEC-IA Awards Windsor Heights Engineering Excellence

The City of Windsor Heights’ University Avenue Improvements project received an American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa Engineering Achievement Award at their Engineering Excellence Banquet on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. This award recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value. Projects from across the State of Iowa are rated on uniqueness and/or innovative application of new or existing techniques; future value to the engineering profession and public perception; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner needs.

The City of Windsor Heights has inquired about redesigning University Avenue for many years to provide a more pedestrian and business friendly roadway. This major roadway runs the entire length of the city, so many opinions of how the roadway should look exist.

Bolton & Menk examined previous studies and created a plan to meet city and surrounding area needs. The roadway was converted to a three-lane roadway from a four-lane configuration with the addition of a 12-foot multi-use trail, new street lighting, wayfinding, and other amenities that provide a more user-friendly district. The project included funding through the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Iowa DNR, and various city funds. We assisted the city in applying for multiple grants. Open houses were held to inform the public and gather project feedback.
