The City of Algona’s 2022 Street Reconstruction project was honored by the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa by receiving a Quality Design Award in the Municipal Paving category. This award is given to projects and programs that exemplify quality design, environmental stewardship, and achievements in the advancement of asphalt paving.
The existing asphalt streets throughout the City of Algona were aging, deteriorating, and showing signs of distress. The city worked with Bolton & Menk to develop a comprehensive street improvement plan to get the best overall value for the city in a short period of time. Affected streets were reviewed to determine if the underground utility infrastructure was adequate and if the existing pavement condition was suitable for rehabilitation as opposed to full reconstruction.
The result was a multi-year program designed to implement numerous mill and overlay projects per year for the next several years. The 2022 Street Improvements project included 26 blocks of asphalt mill and overlay, including curb repairs and ADA sidewalk upgrades. Asphalt was selected as the pavement material due to its ability to be patched, edge-milled, and overlayed, avoiding a full reconstruction.
Performing a rehabilitation with asphalt versus a full reconstruction allowed the projects to be completed quickly with less impact and disturbance to neighboring property owners. Resurfacing the existing residential streets with asphalt was the most cost-effective option, allowing the city to spread its taxpayer dollars farther and improve more streets in a shorter timeframe than traditional reconstruction options.
Our commitment to providing quality infrastructure improvements throughout Iowa was also recognized by the American Public Works Association – Iowa Chapter, as we were named their 2022 Consultant of the Year! We have also received accolades for our concrete paving work in Iowa from the Iowa Concrete Paving Association.
