Minot Broadway Avenue Corridor Study Wins ACEC ND Award

The Broadway Avenue Corridor Study in Minot, North Dakota has received a 2022 ACEC ND Engineering Excellence Award in the Studies, Research, and Consulting Engineering Services category. The project team was recognized at the organization’s spring conference on Tuesday, May 10. The Engineering Excellence Awards competition recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value. Submitted projects were scored on the following rating guidelines: uniqueness and/or innovative application of new or existing techniques; future value to the engineering profession and perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs, including schedule and budget.

The Broadway Avenue corridor is a US Highway, a truck route, and a major arterial through the city. To tens of thousands of motorists and freight carriers, it’s the regional connection between Minot and the rest of the world. It is an important corridor for Minot’s transit service, bicyclists, and pedestrians. To business owners, it’s home where access and safety are constantly in competition. To many of Minot’s residents, it’s a major barrier whose speeds and congestion limit access to major destinations by bike or foot. Due to the variety of users, the corridor must work for all modes of transportation.

Bolton & Menk led a talented team that included the City of Minot, NDDOT, and our friends at KLJ and Apex Engineering. This corridor study included Broadway from the northern city limits at 46th Avenue N to the southern city limits at 41st Avenue S. The purpose of this study was to identify transportation issues and opportunities, develop and analyze potential solutions, and prioritize and program projects that will improve the safety and mobility for all users of the corridor. The results of this study will be a series of short-, mid-, and long-term transportation-based improvements.

The entire study is a spectacular example of what a well-thought-out and well-orchestrated project can produce. As one of the most complex studies the area had ever undergone, the client was thrilled with all aspects of the project, from planning to final results.
