The Green Receives 2024 Charlotte Urban Design Award

The Green, an iconic park in Uptown Charlotte, was the recipient of a 2024 City of Charlotte Urban Design award. The park received the Great Public Space award, highlighting its significance in the urban fabric of the city.

Birthed from a vision to provide green space for community members and workers in a city needing vibrant public space, the 1.5-acre urban park is a hidden jewel within Charlotte’s Second Ward. In many respects, The Green has influenced countless cities in the Carolinas and set the standard for urban public space in Charlotte as the first vibrant park space constructed in Uptown Charlotte.

In honor of the client’s commitment to public education and early childhood literacy, engaging public art installations were incorporated throughout the park. Works including sculptures, sounds, author signposts, gameboards, a secret garden reading room with mosaic furniture, and an interactive fish fountain, are all centered on a literary theme bringing both an intellectually stimulating yet playful aesthetic.

The Urbies is an annual event celebrating exceptional urban design in Charlotte. By involving the community in the nomination process, it fosters ongoing conversations about what makes places unique and outstanding.
