To facilitate the changing needs of the users, the culture, and the environment, Appalachian State University wanted to implement a master plan that promotes a just and sustainable future.
Appalachian State University (ASU) desired a master plan to address evolving needs, culture, and the environment, ensuring a just and sustainable future. Bolton & Menk and Duda Paine Architects collaborated on the master plan. Through extensive stakeholder engagement, including university leadership, faculty, staff, students, and representatives from the Town of Boone, the design team conducted listening sessions, meetings, and design charrettes. They aimed to develop a visionary and harmonious plan aligned with the university's strategic goals and the vibrant campus. Principal areas of ASU's main campus and satellite locations underwent thorough study, encompassing open spaces, gateways, multimodal transportation, sustainability principles, future construction/renovation, and the campus' connection to the urban fabric. The completed master plan encapsulated all these components, transforming ASU's campus and surroundings. Now, students enjoy a breathtaking environment with abundant cultural and recreational opportunities, fostering an exceptional experience while paving the way for a just and sustainable future.
