Mertz, Thompson Receive APWA-NC Recognition

Jim Mertz and Jacque Thompson, of our Raleigh, North Carolina location, both received recognition from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA-NC) for their efforts in the organization. Jim was one of two President’s Award recipients for his special efforts during the past year which have contributed to the success of the APWA North Carolina Chapter. Jacque received a Member of Excellence Award for her work with the Young Professional’s Committee and the Leadership and Management Division. Both received their awards at the APWA-NC Leadership and Management Conference on May 16, 2024.

About Jim

Jim is an associate GIS project manager who began his career in 2011 and has served in a variety of project roles, including project management, GIS project development, UAV services, multimodal transportation planning, public engagement, and safety and mobility analysis. He believes the power of technology can help create more sustainable communities. A problem-solver at heart, Jim is passionate about providing creative solutions using a variety of technological resources.

Jim has been involved with APWA-NC since 2021 and has held several roles in the organization. An active member and former chair of the Young Professionals Committee, Jim is the current Chair of the CONNECT Committee. CONNECT pulls together expertise from the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Sustainability; Membership; Young Professionals; and Technology committees to connect and collaborate. He also represents Region III on the National APWA Young Professional Committee.

About Jacque

Jacque is an associate project engineer who began her engineering career with Bolton & Menk in 2014 following a two-year internship with the firm. She completes preliminary and final designs of street and utility improvements for various municipalities and counties. She has additional experience performing construction observation and quantity documentation while communicating with residents and city staff on street and utility improvements, new residential subdivisions, intersection improvements, sanitary sewer lining, and various infrastructure improvements. Jacque loves the fact that she is helping improve neighborhoods and city infrastructure and is making a difference in people’s daily lives.

Currently serving as the APWA-NC Young Professionals Past Chair, Jacque has also been involved with the organization since 2021. She led the Young Professionals Committee last year and is currently on the APWA-NC Leadership and Management Division Board of Directors. The Leadership and Management Division strives to foster a learning and networking experience amongst leadership across all sectors of public works focusing on program and project management, leadership development, human resources management, succession planning, infrastructure asset management, customer service, and program/project financial planning.
