Educate, Equip, and Empower Communities with Low Salt Strategies
Many cold climate regions are threatened by the ever-growing chloride issue. Chloride, primarily from road salt used in winter, poses a significant environmental threat as it is a permanent pollutant. Bolton & Menk has been focused on finding solutions to address this problem and figuring out a comprehensive approach to reducing chloride usage through educating winter maintenance professionals, equipping communities with the necessary tools to make strategic decisions, and empowering communities to implement low salt strategies.
Bolton & Menk aims to Educate communities about the environmental impacts of chloride and the importance of low salt design. Our goal is to take steps to improve infrastructure designs and promote best practices for reducing salt usage without compromising safety.
We also will Equip professionals with resources such as the Low Salt Primer, design checklists, and model ordinances. These tools help assess opportunities for low salt implementation and guide communities in adopting these practices. Training sessions and field assessments are also part of this effort to ensure professionals are well-prepared to apply low salt principles effectively.
Lastly, we Empower communities to take control of their chloride reduction efforts. By prioritizing chloride reduction, communities can improve their freshwater resources and reduce long-term costs associated with chloride pollution. Bolton & Menk supports these efforts by verifying the effectiveness of implemented strategies and helping communities meet their chloride reduction goals.
The LSiD™ (Low Salt Solutions) package includes a variety of strategies for reducing chloride use. This initiative has been successful in communities, such as the Low Salt Pilot City in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
The Educate, Equip, and Empower toolkit serves as a guide for communities and professionals to understand and implement effective chloride reduction strategies, ultimately aiming for a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to winter maintenance. With collaboration and continuous improvement, we can all work together to achieve a lower salt future.
