Low Salt Solutions
The Chloride Problem: Many populated cold climate regions are facing the threat of chloride pollution to their freshwater future. Chloride, a permanent pollutant, is mainly found in road salt and is frequently used to increase safety on surfaces in the winter, such as on roads, sidewalks, and parking lots.
Our Mission Toward Lower Salt: Through our interest in improving the planning for and design of saltable surfaces, we strive to educate, equip, and empower communities, allowing them to eventually take the reigns and have autonomy over their future by making informed decisions based on low salt principles. We will work with you to give you the knowledge and the tools to achieve your goals.
Bolton & Menk developed LSiD™ (Low Salt Solutions), a package of chloride reduction strategies and principles, which includes a source reduction strategy through low salt design. This popular initiative has empowered and propelled our internal work. However, we wanted to take Low Salt Solutions a step further by working along side communities to see how these chloride reduction strategies would integrate with their vision for the future.
EDUCATE:
When it comes to winter safety and salt reduction, Bolton & Menk has taken a deep dive to expose design deficiencies and combat the issues. Educating professionals on low salt design principles will spread awareness on how to improve infrastructure designs and take major strides forward in tackling the chloride problem together.
EQUIP:
We train professionals, expose them to tools like the Low Salt Guide, design checklists, and model ordinances, assess low salt opportunities in the field, and discuss strategies for communities to employ these concepts across their platforms.
EMPOWER:
An agency that prioritizes chloride reduction and is active in understanding and reducing the use of chloride will improve the future of their freshwater resources and drive down legacy costs associated with chloride imports. We provide a new path forward for communities interested in low salt design, as they have provided us with insight that allows us to refine our low salt concepts. We verify results (ROI, value) of the effectiveness of the low salt solutions implemented and assist with ensuring chloride reduction goals are met.
Through changing our design approach, we can envision safer winter infrastructure that boasts faster pavement recovery and better control of blowing snow and meltwater sprawl. If you’re interested in learning what Low Salt Design can accomplish, fill out the form below and we’ll send you a link to our Low Salt Design Guide, our guide to winter infrastructure design. This free guide will show how we use design strategies to boost winter safety and drive down the need for salt.
