Military Outreach Events Build Community Impact

This spring, Bolton & Menk’s Military Affinity Group proudly honored Memorial Day by giving back to our local military communities. With more than 40 veterans represented across our locations, the group organized three regional outreach events to support service members and their families, each one rooted in gratitude, connection, and community impact.

Military Outreach in Minnesota: Supporting the Fisher House

In Minneapolis, volunteers rolled up their sleeves at the Fisher House—a nonprofit providing free lodging for families of hospitalized veterans. Our team cleaned window screens, vacuumed carpets, and dusted furniture to ensure a comfortable environment for residents.

“It felt meaningful to give back to the organization that supported my parents while I was in the service,” shared Elena Herberg, Water Resources Design Engineer. “During a really hard time, the Fisher House took away so much stress so my parents could focus on being with me.”

The Fisher House Program, founded in 1990, has served thousands of families across the country. Our Minnesota team was proud to contribute to its mission of compassion and care.

Remembering in Iowa: Honoring Fallen Heroes

In Des Moines, our team gathered at Glendale Cemetery to place flags on the gravestones of fallen veterans ahead of Memorial Day. This solemn act of remembrance ensured that families visiting their loved ones would be greeted with a symbol of honor and respect.

“I participate in events like this because it is my firm belief that the contributions of all veterans should be recognized and remembered,” said Ron Covert, Water/Wastewater Engineering Technician.

The event was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by service members and the importance of preserving their legacy.

Carolinas: Cards of Gratitude

Across our North Carolina and South Carolina locations, employees participated in card-making events in partnership with the nonprofit A Million Thanks. With stations set up in breakrooms and common areas, individuals had the opportunity to write heartfelt messages to thank service members for their dedication.

Military Outreach in the Southeast: Supporting Honor Flight Upstate

Our Southeast team also participated in the Annual Freshwater Freddie Golf Tournament, hosted by Renewable Water Resources (ReWa). As proud sponsors, our employees enjoyed a day on the green while supporting Honor Flight Upstate—a nonprofit dedicated to honoring veterans through commemorative trips to Washington, D.C.

The event raised funds to help veterans visit memorials built in their honor, many for the first time. It was a meaningful way to combine recreation with purpose.

Certified Home Base Iowa Business

Bolton & Menk’s commitment to supporting military members extends beyond outreach events. This year, our Iowa team was recognized as a Certified Home Base Iowa Business for our efforts in recruiting and employing veterans.

Five people stand in front of a Bolton & Menk sign outdoors; two hold a Military Outreach plaque or certificate. Three wear yellow or green shirts, one wears a dress, and one holds the certificate. A brick building and greenery are in the background.

We were honored to host Home Base Iowa representative Robert Haege III at our Ames location to accept our certificate of recognition. Haege connects veterans and their spouses with educational resources and career opportunities as they transition to civilian life.

“Becoming a Certified Iowa Homebase Employer is meaningful to our firm because it opens the door for new hires with more unique skillsets,” said Survey Field Technician and former serviceman Logan Cory. “It was great to sit down with Robert and go over what this means for our firm and how it will benefit everyone. We’re excited to see where this new opportunity takes us!”

“Hiring veterans brings a number of important skillsets to our teams,” commented Talent Management Generalist Anastasia Whited. “In addition to gaining technical skills, service in military branches provides unique training, teamwork and operational opportunities that can help employees excel in civilian roles. Being able to pull from and leverage those experiences adds to our resilience, helping everyone at our firm.”

Our Continued Commitment

As we approach the end of the year, our Military Affinity Group is preparing for its third annual Pre-Annual Party Social. Employees and their guests will gather from across regions to celebrate accomplishments, participate in military trivia, and enjoy time together.

“As a non-military member who supports our Military Affinity Group, our Pre-Annual Party Social is such a special time of the year,” said Training and Outreach Coordinator Lily Winter. “It is incredible to see the strength of our military community across Bolton & Menk, as well as have a chance to celebrate everyone’s accomplishments and catch up.”

We are incredibly grateful for our Military Affinity Group and the veterans who enrich our teams. Our recruiting team continues to develop specialized outreach materials for career fairs, ensuring that current and former service members feel seen, valued, and supported throughout their journey at Bolton & Menk. We look forward to continuing this important work together.
