The city was able to economically rehabilitate this nearly 100-year-old floodwall and extend the useful design life of the floodwall for another 50 years or more.
A 1920’s era flood protection wall at the Minneapolis water treatment facility was near failure due to scour caused by the Mississippi River. During flood events, the floodwall provides protection to the city’s only raw water intake from the Mississippi.
Bolton & Menk was retained by the Water Department to evaluate the structural capacity and global stability of the floodwall. Our team, in conjunction with our project partner, Itasca Consulting Group, were able to develop an economical and technically feasible rehabilitation method. Project construction included 65-foot-long grouted soil tendons, 11,000 square feet of sheet piling, and 900 tons of rip rap placed.
