Location
City of Ames, Iowa
Overview
With a new parking lot, large hangar, and new terminal building, the Ames Municipal Airport is set up to serve the Ames community well into the future.
Sectors
The existing Ames Municipal Airport terminal and parking lot were in need of major rehabilitation in order to serve the expanding airport. The terminal building was too small to provide the required services at the airport. The poorly configured parking lot did not have enough spots to accommodate traffic. Iowa State Athletics use the airport to fly sports teams to events, which left parking lots and grass areas filled with vehicles. This left few spaces for regular airport traffic.
Working with an advisory committee that included the city, ISU, airport, and community members, Bolton & Menk evaluated the terminal building and parking lot to determine the best solution. Several options were evaluated, including rehabilitating the existing parking lot and terminal building, expanding the existing parking lot, or constructing a new parking lot. A solution was designed that allowed for a new terminal building, new hangar, and new parking lot to serve the airport.
Adequate space for ISU athletics and regular airport traffic is now available. The parking lot was designed to easily expand as airport traffic increases. With a new parking lot, large hangar, and new terminal building, the Ames Municipal Airport is set up to serve the Ames community well into the future.
