Year after year, heavy rainfall events throughout hurricane season have overwhelmed the drainage systems along Hillside Drive and Ocean Boulevard, leading to major flooding in the area. The City of North Myrtle Beach partnered with Bolton & Menk to design improvements to the stormwater system across 410 acres of watershed. Our team constructed two detention ponds in the upper reach of the watershed, implemented improvements within the main drainage channel, and raised the elevation of Hillside Drive to use as storage within the existing 21-acre wetland.
The city also reached out to Bolton & Menk to design and permit a sheet pile wall, measuring 900 linear feet, intended to impound 100 acre-feet of stormwater within the 21-acre wetland area along Hillside Drive, between 9th Avenue South and 6th Avenue South. These improvements consisted of raising the existing roadway on Hillside Drive by three-to-four feet and creating a detention pond.
Since installing the new stormwater management systems, the project area has seen significant flood control.
