New Belgium East Coast Brewery

New Belgium Brewing constructed its East Coast Brewery in Asheville, North Carolina. This signature project consisted of the design and construction of a 145,905-square-foot brewery, visitors center, and various support facilities. Throughout the site search process, they focused on brownfield sites. They placed emphasis on the prevention of taking agricultural land out of production or eliminating natural habitat to bring what was once a source of jobs and industry back into productive use, and finding a location near other amenities, increasing density and walkability.

The brewery was built on a former brownfield site in the River Arts District. Site amenities include parking for cars and bicycles, beer garden, rolle bolle court, an event lawn with bridges traversing the existing stream that bisects the site, and tour routes and accommodations for visitors. Bolton & Menk provided land planning, civil engineering, and landscape architecture services. Throughout the design process, we worked closely with the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources on site mitigation. The site uses bioswales to convey stormwater and filter and treat runoff, porous concrete/pavers for the parking lots, bioretention for the visitor parking lot and brewhouse/malt building, and rainwater harvesting and reuse on site.
