Overview
Duck Lake Road needed critical infrastructure upgrades including wider lanes, pedestrian facilities, improved stormwater management, and improvements to the narrow causeway that bisects Duck Lake and its westerly lobe.
Sectors
The Duck Lake Road Improvement project provided critical infrastructure upgrades to a 0.4-mile stretch of Duck Lake Road adjacent to an elementary school and including a narrow causeway bisecting Duck Lake and its westerly lobe. The road needed wider lanes, pedestrian facilities, and improved stormwater management. Additionally, the existing roadway bisecting Duck Lake was causing environmental impacts, and the permitting process through the Watershed District and Minnesota DNR was proving difficult.
The Duck Lake Road Improvement project reconnected the two lobes of Duck Lake by constructing a 235-foot-by-47-foot haunched five-span continuous concrete slab bridge with a pedestrian overlook and fishing pier on pile bents and integral abutments. Stormwater management included sediment capture devices, an infiltration basin, and shoreline plantings. We provided project concept development, including alternatives analysis for the Duck Lake crossing; preliminary and final bridge design; special provisions development and load rating analysis; land surveying; hydraulic and hydrologic studies; and bridge construction inspection.
The project resulted in a safer, more accessible roadway with enhanced pedestrian accommodations and stormwater management. Collaboration with the Watershed District and other partners brought significant funding and support, culminating in a community centerpiece and a lasting positive impact on the Duck Lake area.
