Conceptual layouts for arterial BRT stations were needed for up to eight intersections on Glenwood Avenue North (CSAH 40) between Penn Avenue and 10th Street North in Minneapolis. Metro Transit was seeking assistance to identify the footprint and physical impacts from C Line BRT stations on Glenwood Avenue.
Bolton & Menk reviewed field conditions, existing information, and GIS data to develop an understanding of intersection concept locations and context. Baseline intersection layouts (pre-BRT) were developed, incorporating known plans for future reconstruction in related projects. Additionally, BRT intersection designs at platform locations were developed. Concepts addressed sidewalks, BRT platform dimensions, bike lanes/treatments, parking and traffic lanes, and clearly identified changes to baseline conditions. The need for any variance from existing standards by locations and types of variances needed were also reviewed. Platform designs were successfully incorporated into existing conditions.
The BRT concept designs will function as a solid reference point for conversations with project partners and the public about what is and is not possible from an engineering perspective throughout the corridor. Metro Transit can now embark on the public outreach/engagement phase of the Glenwood Transit Realignment Study.
