City of Marshall Project Receives Concrete Paving Award

The City of Marshall’s North 3rd Street and West Lyon Street project received a Concrete Paving Award from the Concrete Paving Association of Minnesota and MnDOT under the City – New Construction category. These awards are presented to projects throughout Minnesota that demonstrate high-quality concrete pavement construction and concrete pavement rehabilitation.

The City of Marshall was looking to improve and revitalize its downtown North 3rd Street corridor. As the project was being evaluated, the city recognized the existing infrastructure was at the end of its useful life and the existing bituminous pavement was showing severe distress. Issues included failing pavement, lead water service lines, and local drainage issues. With North 3rd Street being part of Marshall’s busy downtown business district, the community wanted to address a couple visions. First, they selected a low maintenance, long-lasting pavement type to minimize the need for additional work along the corridor. Then they highlighted the area as a regional destination, which included reconfiguring North 3rd Street as a one-way street to provide space for an event plaza and streetscaping amenities.

Concrete paving was a clear answer to help the two main drivers of the project. The life cycle and minimal need for long-term maintenance means this area will not need additional pavement improvements for decades. With the addition of different stains, two types of curing compounds, and sawing patterns, the concrete makes the event plaza a feature within the business district and can be enjoyed by community members for many years to come.
